Master Richard Hamlin School of Original Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan

Instruction Programme

Weekday Classes

Course Structure:

Classes are taught in the traditional way of the Original Yang style. Classes are of 1½ hours duration and take place on the same evening/day of each week that you selected when enrolling.

The process of learning Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan; Taiji Quan) is a continuous one, however within the first year, the aim of the course is to teach the whole of the Original Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan Long Form and introduce the student to Taoist relaxation exercises, Chi Kung (Qigong; Qi Gong) and Taoist philosophy.

As the student progresses within the school, the more advanced forms will be taught, including Weapons Forms as well as the different Pushing Hands routines and Applications of Tai Chi Chuan and Advanced Chi Kung and Meditation methods. Classes are kept deliberately small so that each student gets individual tuition from the master.

These classes are structured so that the student can learn the complete system of Tai Chi Chuan within these midweek classes. This is especially useful for those students who are unable to attend any extra days of practice or extra courses. However. as with all of the programmes, the student will need to practice in the time they are away from the school.

Each student will receive one formal class each week and will be able to attend one extra practice class free of charge, which takes place on a Saturday morning.

Saturday Catch-up Class

At this class, all students have the opportunity to join in with other groups at the same level, or use the space to work on their own practice within the school environment and gain further help with their work from the Master.

Inevitably, classes will be missed due to holidays, work, illness etc. The student will be able to use this extra session as a catch-up class to keep level with their group. This catch-up class can also be utilized prior to being absent from class in the case of business trips or holidays, thereby keeping you level with your group when you return

Instruction takes place over four terms throughout the year:

51 Jan – 31 March, 1 April – 30 June, 1 July – 30 Sept, 1 Oct – 191 Dec.

(2009)

(1) These dates vary slightly according to how the calendar falls in each year.

Seminars and Workshops

For all students on any course listed, once the Tai Chi Chuan Form has been completed for the first time, there are opportunities to enrol on additional Training Sessions and Workshops - These are usually held on Sundays and are extensive, however, they are not designed for any student to leap-frog the main course programme but rather they are designed through their lesson content, for the student to take a closer look at the lessons already learned, gaining deeper insight into these lessons and to work with students from other groups and from other parts of the school as they put in a hard days practice.

In this way students who are only able to attend their midweek classes will not find themselves falling behind behind their class.

Master Classes in Applied Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan Applied to Sports

It is recognised worldwide, especially amongst some high profile sportspersons, that martial arts and specifically, Tai Chi Chuan, can aid performance and help the committed sportsperson gain competitive advantage in their respective sport.

Private lessons in Tai Chi Chuan are available for the professional or serious amateur in most sports. I am also prepared to teach small groups within the same sport. Your work will follow the strict traditional training methods used in the Original Yang Style of Tai Chi Chuan. However, special emphasis on some aspects of Tai Chi Chuan will be made that relate to the specific requirements of each sport and the individual needs of each sportsperson.

I have successfully worked with many athletes to date, in the sports listed below with very good results.

This is not a comprehensive list and enquiries are welcomed relating to any sport.

None of these teaching programmes will attempt to interfere with any established techniques of the various sports nor should they conflict with any technical coaching you may be receiving. The work is at a different level and is designed to enhance performance through the integration of Tai Chi Chuan into your sport and introduce the specific benefits gained from practising Tai Chi Chuan into the both the training routines and performance dimensions of the sport.

I recognise the importance to both the professional and serious amateur of gaining the edge over one's opponent and therefore, where private lessons are sought, complete confidentiality is assured.

As with all students each participant must become members of the Association to recieve tuition.

Enrolment: Tuition can take place either as weekly classes, small private groups or private lessons - Residential Camps may also be a possibility. Prospective students, please contact Master Hamlin directly through the School, using the contact details provided on this website, providing an outline of your requirements.

Master Classes - Arts Programme

Tai Chi Chuan Applied to the Arts

Private lessons in Tai Chi Chuan are available for the performing artist in the fields of music, dance, singing and acting. I am also prepared to teach small groups.

The student's work will follow the strict traditional training methods used in the Original Yang Style of Tai Chi Chuan. However, particular emphasis on some aspects of Tai Chi Chuan will be made relating to the specific demands of each performance art.

Specialised programmes are in place, that take into account, the physical, mental and emotional requirements of the artist, during both performance and practice, in the various disciplines. From this base, work, will be sensitive to and centred around the individual needs of the performer, through the introduction and integration of Tai Chi Chuan into their specific skills and lifestyle in order to achieve maximum benefit for the individual.

I am also available for consultation in martial art choreography.

Where private lessons are sought, complete confidentiality is respected and assured at all times.

Working with Schools and the State Education System

The introduction of Tai Chi Chuan into the state school, college and university education system, is a practice gathering momentum worldwide and is now being recognised by educationalists in this country (UK), as being a valuable use of school time. It is not only used as part of the physical education of students, but also as part of the performing arts programmes.

Personally, I do not recommend Tai Chi Chuan for the very young due to the complexity of this system and its requirement of the student to direct their attention inwardly in order to learn this art. I believe that children should at these early ages be exploring the outer world, taking part in more external physical activities, games and sports. However, I am prepared and to teach maturing students 14 yrs and older with parental permission and where a genuine aptitude and interest is present in the student.

Tai Chi Chuan is especially suited to students who recognise that personal culture rather than direct competition is a viable and equally productive form of development through exercise.

With this in mind, I welcome the interest of any heads of school or departments and I am available to teach on site pending review.

As with all students each participant must become members of the Association to recieve tuition.

Enrolment: Please contact Master Hamlin directly through the School, using the contact details provided on this website, providing an outline of your requirements.

Working with Disability and Special Needs Students

Tai Chi Chuan is an ideal activity for young people with special needs, where small gains are great achievements. I have already taught small groups of special needs students successfully and am available to teach on site pending review.

With this in mind, I welcome the interest of any heads of school or departments who may wish to discuss this matter further.

As with all students each participant must become members of the Association to recieve tuition.

Enrolment: Please contact Master Hamlin directly through the School, using the contact details provided on this website, providing an outline of your requirements.
