Master Richard Hamlin School of Original Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan
Rules of The School
The learning of this traditional martial art goes hand in hand with a required level of responsibility that goes way beyond normal expectations of the individual in other spheres of learning and social activities. Furthermore, students are expected to maintain these rules of conduct at all times, not just in classes.
The rules and expected code of conduct of all students are in no way meant to be overbearing, but rather they are there to ensure all students are able to learn in an environment that is safe and conducive to learn and therefore exist for the benefit of all students.
These rules also represent the beginnings of the student's martial art training and should be at the core of the martial artist.
All Students:
- Must uphold the principle of Discipline in the Pursuit of
Excellence1 without intent to harm or disadvantage other people in this pursuit.
[(1) Discipline in the Pursuit of Excellence - By this it is
meant that all students, whilst endeavouring to reach higher levels of refinement and achievement in Tai Chi
Chuan or any other activity undertaken, either within the school or outside of the school, at any time, will
do so through their own self-discipline and personal effort, without the intent to harm or disadvantage other
people in this pursuit, in full respect of and without interference to, the personal boundaries of all people
with whom they interact.]
- Are expected to conduct themselves at all times with fairness and behave with respect towards all people
regardless of age, sex, religion, race, size, or ability.
- Must ensure their behaviour and attitude, by way of example, be in accordance with these rules,
promoting and not conflicting with the aims and objectives of the School.
- Students must at all times behave in a way that will not bring the Master or the School into
disrepute.
- Should observe the traditional values and practices of the School, as taught by the Master and
maintained by the students.
- Should make no attempt to teach Tai Chi Chuan unless authorized to do so by the Master.
- Must accept that the knowledge gained as a student of the School, is for their personal development
only and shall not pass this knowledge on to any third party, either directly or indirectly, through public
display, teaching, recording or distribution on any media, including electronically, without written
permission from the Master.
- Should not be receiving Tai Chi Chuan Instruction from any other teacher or school. More senior
students, in addition, should not be a student of, or have any alignment to, any other Master or school
of martial arts.
- Assume full responsibility for themselves, their behaviour and actions.
All students accept that each of the above rules is a requirement of membership of the School and
constitutes a contract between the student with the Master and the School.
For those people who are accepted as students, you will be members of a prestigious school and part of a
continuing tradition of the highest order and of an internationally shared history. Through your own
participation and contribution, this will become something that you will be proud to be a part of and to
maintain.
